MR. LOWE: I went between 8:15 and 8:30.
SENATOR SMITH: What time were you awakened?
MR. LOWE: I do not know. I was awakened by hearing voices, and I thought it was very strange, and somehow they woke me up and I realized there must be something the matter; so I looked out and I saw a lot of people around, and I jumped up and got dressed and went up on deck.
SENATOR SMITH: What did you find when you got up there?
MR. LOWE: I found that all the passengers were wearing belts.
SENATOR SMITH: Life belts?
MR. LOWE: Yes, sir, I also found that they were busy getting the boats ready to go overboard.
SENATOR SMITH: What did you do?
MR. LOWE: I met somebody, and they said she had struck an iceberg, and I could feel by my feet that there was something wrong.
SENATOR SMITH: What — a listing?
MR. LOWE: No. I heard that term applied yesterday, and it is wrong. It is not listing; it is tipping.
SENATOR SMITH: I suppose he meant tipping when he said listing; but did she tip?
MR. LOWE: This is sideways [indicating].
SENATOR SMITH: Could you feel her tip sideways?
MR. LOWE: No; there was no listing. Listing is the side motion and tipping is the end motion. She was by the bow; she was very much by the bow. She had a grade downhill; a grade like that [indicating].
SENATOR SMITH: The bow, you say, was down?
MR. LOWE: Down, and the stern was up.
SENATOR SMITH: Could you tell at about what angle she was at that time?
MR. LOWE: Do you want the perpendicular angle or the horizontal angle?
SENATOR SMITH: The horizontal angle.
MR. LOWE: I should say she was about 12° to 15° by the head.
SENATOR SMITH: How long was that after the impact?
MR. LOWE: I do not know, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: You did not feel the impact?
MR. LOWE: I never felt anything.
SENATOR SMITH: You do not know how long that was?

M. LOWE : Je me suis levé entre 8 h 15 et 8 h 30.

M. LOWE : J’ai rencontré quelqu’un, et on m’a dit qu’il avait heurté un iceberg, et j’ai senti à mes pieds qu’il y avait quelque chose qui clochait.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quoi — une gîte?
M. LOWE : Non. J’ai entendu dire que ce terme s’appliquait hier, et il est erroné. Il ne s’agit pas d’une liste, mais d’un pourboire (jeu de mot en langue anglaise).
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je suppose qu’il voulait dire donner un pourboire lorsqu’il a parlé d’inscription sur la liste, mais a-t-il donné de la gîte?
M. LOWE : C’est de côté [indication].
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pouviez-vous sentir sa gîte de côté?
M. LOWE : Non, il n’y avait pas de gîte. L’inscription est la motion parallèle et le renversement est la motion finale. Il était près de la proue; il était très près de la proue. Il avait une pente descendante; une pente comme celle-là [indiquant].
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous dites que la proue était en bas?
M. LOWE : Vers le bas, et la poupe vers le haut.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pourriez-vous nous dire sous quel angle il se trouvait à ce moment-là?
M. LOWE : Voulez-vous l’angle perpendiculaire ou l’angle horizontal?
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : L’angle horizontal.
M. LOWE : Je devrais dire qu’il était d’environ 12° à 15° par l’avant.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Combien de temps cela a-t-il duré après l’impact?
M. LOWE : Je ne le sais pas, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous n’avez pas ressenti l’impact?
M. LOWE : Je n’ai jamais rien ressenti.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous ne savez pas combien de temps cela a duré?
